What is Christian Union about? A Christian Union is both a group that exists to encourage Christian students to live and speak for Jesus while at university. Simultaneously the Christian Union is also a place for people to question, examine, and look into the claims of Christianity, and to discuss topical issues related to the Christian faith. Is the Christian Union affiliated with any organisations?
Yes, the Christian Union is affiliated with IFES Ireland (International Fellowship of Evangelical Students), the national body of Christian Unions, and in turn it is also affiliated with IFES World who as of 2006 were active in over 150 countries internationally. There are over 25 Christian Unions in Ireland, and we meet both at Joint Colleges in October and our leadership teams meet at ECON every year. We also get involved in events with other Christian Unions from time to time through joint planning. Does the Christian Union have any denominational ties? The very nature of a Christian Union is to welcome all Christians, and to welcome those who do not believe in Christianity to explore the person of Jesus, the Trinity, amongst other Christian teachings. Although we do liaise with churches in our local community and further afield, we feel in order to fulfil this aim sufficiently we have no denominational ties, apart from to say that we promote traditional Christian belief based on the teachings of the Bible. Our members are practising Christians of all denominations or none, and those who are sceptical about our faith. We hope as a society to be a bridge between Christian and non-Christian students, and to engage our campus about our faith. So what do you do?We have our main meeting on Tuesdays at 6pm in An Tobar, Student Services Centre, and it tends to vary from week to week. A large proportion of the time is dedicated to inviting speakers from different churches, Christian lecturers at NUI Maynooth and further afield. We seek to get people thinking about God, and the big questions of life, and we'd like you to join us in doing so. We also have social events throughout the Semester such as food nights, bowling, games nights amongst numerous other things. On Wednesdays at 12pm in the Meeting Room 2, Students Union Building, we have our Bible Study, for this Semester it is based on the Gospel of Mark, but as time moves on it will vary between numerous texts of both the Old and New Testaments, documents which we believe as Christians contain all things that are necessary for salvation and grace. Where exactly do you meet? You can find more information (including maps) about where we meet by clicking here. I'm an atheist / agnostic / non-Christian, is it okay if I come along? Yes of course! We welcome scepticism, and questioning at all times. Our aim as a Christian Union isn't only to be there for Christians, but also to provide a bridge between Christians and non-Christians on our campus.
